As part of most UK landline deals, the landline providers will often offer free calls to UK landlines, although these will usually be restricted to a certain time of the day or week (for example – free calls to UK Landlines in the evenings or at weekends).

However, calls to mobiles will usually be excluded from these ‘free call’ packages, with some UK landline providers charging over 30p per minute for some calls to mobiles.

Probably the most obvious but the temptation is to dial the mobile number first because you’re more likely to get hold of them first time. Although they still charge significantly more for calls to mobiles, most landline providers will still offer reduced rates for calling mobiles in the evening or at the weekends. Check your UK landline deal and of this is the case try making calls to mobiles at the cheapest time for you.

Some UK landline providers also charge different rates for calls to different mobile networks. So, when you’re comparing UK landline deals have in mind the mobile networks you call most often. One of your choosing criteria could be how much they’ll charge for calls to that mobile network.

Don’t forget your own mobile

You probably have your own mobile phone and the mobile phone operators are much better at including calls to other mobile networks in the ‘free calls’ element of their package. Check out you mobile deal and make sure you use up those free minutes every month before paying for UK landline calls.
