Providers

This is the UK landline provider that you actually pay for your landline service. 20 years ago it was just BT (www.bt.com) but over the last few years many new UK landline providers have entered the market. UK Landline providers can use different networks to provide your landline service (BT network, LLU or Cable) - read more on the networks here.

Package Description

Will show the name of the UK landline service the landline provider is offering (e.g. ‘Primus Home Phone Max’) together with any key features of that particular package (e.g. ‘Unlimited anytime calls to local and national UK landlines’).

Package Cost

This is the monthly amount charged by the UK landline provider for the landline service being offered. This will exclude Line Rental (see below) and any costs for calls made outside of those included in the home phone package – for example, a UK landline deal may include free UK evening calls but calls made during the day will be charged extra at an agreed rate.

It will also exclude any additional costs for particular services – for example paper billing often incurs an additional charge as opposed to online billing which may be free.

Monthly Line Rental

This is the amount charged each month by the UK landline providers to effectively rent the line carrying your calls each month.

Call Charges

This is the amount your UK landline provider will charge for calls made under the home phone deal you select. Call charges to Local & National standard UK landlines are usually broken down into 3 time slots: Daytime, Evening and Weekend.

National Daytime Calls

Daytime time period is usually between 7am and 7pm*

National Evening Calls

Evening calls are usually between 7pm and 7am*

National Weekend Calls

Weekend calls are usually between midnight Friday to midnight Sunday*

Tip 1 - Dig out your last home phone bill and have a look at the number of calls you made and who they were to. Can you make some of those calls more cheaply from your mobile? Make sure you’re using all you free mobile calls before paying Call Costs on Landline Deals.

Tip 2 - Make sure you compare the UK Landline Deals from all the providers available in your area. You could make a big monthly saving by switching to a Landline Provider with a cheaper monthly line rental charge on their Landline Deals.

Tip 3 - Most UK Landline Providers will offer different Packages targeting different types of home phone users. Some will be free but others will incur a monthly fee. Check to see if there is a Package Cost for the Landline Deals you’re considering. You may find any savings on calls will be offset by a monthly package cost.

Tip 4 - Look for the UK Landline Deals that offer cheap or free calls for when you use your home phone most (e.g. Evenings or Weekends). Then try to keep your Landline Calls to those times when you’re getting free or cheap calls.

Tip 5 - If you’re only using Landline Deals to receive Broadband Services check whether your area can receive cable services which can provide Broadband Services without the need for a Landline. This would remove the need for a Landline Deal all together.

Tip 6 - Consider the length of time you’d be happy to sign up for. Many Landline Providers will offer cheaper UK Landline Deals for people who are willing to sign up for longer.

Tip 7 - Have a look through the ‘Additional Services’ section of all the UK Landline Deals you’re considering to see if there are any further savings you can make. Many Landline Deals will charge you extra for receiving your monthly bill in the post. Switch to on line billing and you could reduce the cost of Landline Deals even further.

Tip 8 - Some consumers need special services to be included as part of their UK Landline Deal, for example Voicemail, Last Caller ID or services for the hard of hearing. Tip 10 - Make sure you consider any regular international calls you’ll want to make from your UK Landline – especially if you have family or friends living abroad. Some UK Landline Deals will offer discounted rates to some countries at certain times, however, if you have a Broadband Service consider free calling options such as Skype to keep the cost of your Landline Deal as low as possible.
